The Beginning of Reforestation Season in Lake Atitlán

With the arrival of the first rains in May, Wellkind’s reforestation season begins in earnest. This is one of the busiest and most exciting times of the year for our team, as we begin implementing the work we’ve been preparing for over many months.

Our field staff is currently out in the communities every day, meeting with local farmers, surveying planting sites, and organizing trainings for participating families. This crucial early work ensures that every tree we plant has the greatest chance of survival and impact—ecologically, socially, and economically.

This season, we are proud to begin implementing two major reforestation projects that were approved last year. One, in the community of Chuimanzana, is supported by the Fund for the Conservation of Tropical Forests. The other, in Pachoj, Quiché, is funded by the Fund for Conservation in Guatemala. These projects will help restore native forests, protect vital water sources, and bring lasting benefits to the indigenous families who steward the land.

Reforestation is not just about tree planting—it’s about long-term ecological renewal and supporting communities with tools to build resilience. Through our work, we aim to restore balance to degraded landscapes while also providing fruit, fuelwood, and economic opportunities to families across the region.

Each rainy season is a narrow but powerful window of opportunity. We only have a few short months each year to get thousands of trees into the ground before the dry season returns. That’s why this time is so important—not just for our team, but for the future of the forests and communities that depend on them.
